Mount Rinjani is visited by more than 10,000 people from various countries per year through climbing activities. In addition to the socio-economic impacts, of course climbing activities have an environmental impact. In 2024, the Mount Rinjani National Park Office recorded at least more than 31 tons of waste generated by climbing Mount Rinjani, most of which was left by irresponsible climbers.
The condition of waste on Mount Rinjani has been widely complained about by climbers both domestically and abroad through various channels for years, but the condition of waste on Mount Rinjani has not shown significant progress. Various methods have been carried out through cooperation between organizations/institutions such as clean up, waste data collection, waste inspection at checkout, incentives for guides and porters and so on.
The year 2025 has been determined by the Mount Rinjani National Park Office as the right year to start Rinjani Zero Waste. What is it?
Rinjani Zero waste is a program to minimize the potential for waste on Mount Rinjani through a program to repack visitors' belongings. Among them are reducing the use of plastic packaging and encouraging the use of containers that can be reused.
Although in the early stages not 100% of plastic luggage can be repacked, it is hoped that all climbers will gradually switch to using environmentally friendly packaging and of course the long-term goal of Rinjani Zero Waste is expected to be achieved.
Rinjani Trekking Center as one of the providers of climbing services to Mount Rinjani, took the initiative to conduct a trial well in advance in order to become the basis for implementing the Rinjani Zero Waste 2025 system.
