The Mount Rinjani National Park Office (BTNGR) has temporarily suspended the activity of climbing Mount Rinjani on the island of Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara, for three months from January 1st to March 31st, 2020.

BTNGR Head Dedy Asriady said the closure of the climbing tourism activity was in the framework of ecosystem recovery and based on weather information from the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG).

“Entering the rainy season there is a tendency for extreme weather to occur which has the potential to endanger the safety of visitors. So, we have temporarily closed the climbing activity,” Dedy said as quoted by Antara on Tuesday (31/12).

He added, the temporary closure of the climbing activity was also based on the results of an evaluation meeting of Mount Rinjani climbing tourism activity which was participated by relevant parties in Mataram on December 26, 2019.

Registration of climbing tourism can still be done until December 31st, 2019, with the condition that all tourism business operators and visitors are committed to comply with the regulations in the operational standards of climbing procedures and other mutually agreed provisions.

Dedy added if there are changes in certain situations and conditions on the hiking trail until the closing time is over, then the opening of the hiking trail will be informed after a review of the hiking trail conditions with related partners.

“BTNGR together with related parties will conduct a hiking trail review before the opening of climbing tours to ensure the safety of the hiking trail,” he said.

In the evaluation meeting, he said, his party also provided information related to the ban on carrying and lighting fireworks and firecrackers inside the Mount Rinjani National Park area, especially those that will celebrate New Year’s Eve 2020.

The ban aims to maintain the calm and comfort of visitors, protect ecological conditions, especially the condition of ecosystems, flora and fauna within the national park area.

In addition, to prevent forest fires and in accordance with operational standards for climbing Mount Rinjani procedures. “For visitors who violate these provisions will be subject to sanctions in accordance with applicable regulations,” said Dedy.
