Hiking First Aid Kit Guide for Rinjani and Mountain Treks

By Rhiannon Wilson July 13, 2026

Ever scrolled past one of those “what’s in my backpack” hiking videos? Experienced hikers are showing you exactly what to bring that separates a smooth trek from a miserable one. One of many things that you can do to have an enjoyable trek, especially to Mount Rinjani, is to have a good hiking first aid kit.

That readiness changes the whole course of your trekking situation. A rolled ankle becomes easy to limp back to camp instead of a stretcher evacuation, and a cut becomes quick to patch up. Knowing exactly what to pack in your hiking first aid kit is the first step you can take before hitting the trail.

What Should Go In a First Aid Kit For Hiking?

A hiking first aid kit needs to have trauma dressings, a thermal blanket, dust masks, supplemental oxygen, and oral rehydration salts. They are different from basic home or car kits. If you ever assume that generic kits will do the job on the trail, it might put you at severe risk, especially when planning to hike Mount Rinjani.

Mount Rinjani’s volcanic terrain poses severe risks, even more during the dry season. Non-stop volcanic ash irritates the lungs and throat, while high altitude makes you lose water faster. Also, the steep, rough way down over loose volcanic rock causes most trail injuries. When these three factors compound, an easy trek can quickly become risky.

That’s why we’re breaking down our hiking first aid kit essentials into three categories. Each category targets specific challenges hikers often face on the trail, from foot strain and cut, to altitude-related symptoms. This way, you can quickly know what you need, rather than sifting through basic kit that may be missing the supplies that matter the most for a trek like Rinjani.

The Blister Block

When trekking 3,726-meter active volcanoes, taking action right away is more effective than trying to keep bleeding under control of a popped blister miles away from a proper clinic. So one of the first essentials you need to carry in your hiking first aid kit is moleskin, blister pads (your feet will thank you later!), and antiseptic tape.

Wound Care

You could imagine volcanic terrain isn't so gentle on the skin; tiny, sharp rocks, rough scrambles, and loose volcanic rocks mean cuts and scrapes are common. Antiseptic wipes should be your best friend, as they clean away dirt and volcanic dust/ashes, minimising the chance of infection occurring. Paired with fabric dressings and medical tape, they transform a potentially festering wound into a quick fix.

The Symptom Solver

Then, altitude change can trigger headaches even in fit hikers, and in open nature, unexpected symptoms could develop. Packing paracetamol, ibuprofen, allergy pills, as well as electrolytes, is a lifesaver when you are miles away from a proper clinic.

The 2026 Rinjani Safety Protocol

Mount Rinjani offers an amazing, rewarding trek, but its steep, uneven trails pose serious injury risks without proper readiness. Because of the rugged, high-altitude terrain, emergency support faces complex challenges reaching stranded hikers. Besides a hiking first aid kit, prioritising safety protocols is important before attempting the summit.

That's why we must respect the conditions and start preparing everything the best that we can. Good preparation will help you avoid problems later. The details below explain everything you need to know about the Rinjani Safety Protocol.

Mandatory Insurance

Under the new 2026 regulation, hikers are required to have insurance when planning a trek to Mount Rinjani. If a serious condition occurs, manual, complex, and costly evacuation by the rescue team will be carried out. There are two options you can choose from:

  1. Regular Insurance: included in your ticket to the National Park via E-Renjani. Please note that this only covers basic accidents, minimal medical aid, and evacuation by land.

  2. Premium Insurance: costs IDR 290,000. This one is recommended and sometimes required. If your personal travel insurance does not cover trekking activities and Search and Rescue/helicopter coverage.

Or if you want something way easier, we have an all-in-one package which includes: permit, insurance, and logistics in one system.

Guide Monitoring

With every step, fighting steep hills, cold early in the morning, your lungs will burn, and your heartbeat will rise. Physical readiness matters, but you will still need emotional and physical support during those intense moments on the trail. You're entrusting your life to a tour provider. They are responsible for your safety and well-being in unexpected conditions during the hike.

That's why guide monitoring is included in your safety package. Guides perform daily health check-ins throughout the trek. They check oxygen level and heartbeat to catch early signs of altitude sickness or fatigue before they become serious. It's the core of your safety package, providing a second layer of protection alongside your hiking first aid kit.
