Rinjani Solo Trip 2026: What Solo Hikers Need To Know

By Rhiannon Wilson July 23, 2026

Planning a Rinjani solo trip in 2026? This mountain has become one of Southeast Asia’s most sought-after treks for solo hikers. Rising 3,726 metres above Lombok Island, it delivers a real physical challenge. The mountain has a blue crater lake, an active mini volcano, and sunrise views that stretch across the Wallace Line to Bali and Beyond.

Mount Rinjani National Park has strict rules around who can enter and how. Those rules apply just as much to seasoned trekkers as first-timers. For solo hikers, that does not mean the dream of tackling Rinjani is off the table. Before you start looking at flights, hotels, or gear lists for your Rinjani solo trip, it’s useful to understand exactly how to “solo” this mountain.

Can You Do Mount Rinjani Solo?

In short, yes, you can do a Rinjani solo trip. But it has strict trekking regulations, and due to its challenging terrain and park rules, visitors must follow official trekking procedures. Most trekkers choose to hire an authorised guide or join an organised trekking arrangement for a safer experience. No matter what experience level you have, you’ll be directed to register yourself with the official Rinjani e-permit system. Rangers check permits at the trailhead, and visitors cannot simply arrive at the trailhead and start trekking without completing the required registration and preparation process.

What a Rinjani “solo” trip actually means is that you can travel alone and book your own trip. From there you’ll either join a small guided group, or hire a private guide. When joining a small group, you’ll typically trek alongside other independent travellers from different countries. If you’d rather skip the group dynamic entirely, then a private one is the alternative. The downside is you'll pay way more per person since you’re not splitting the guide and porter costs with anyone else.

Also, before planning your trek, make sure you check the latest updates from the Mount Rinjani National Park about the schedules, route availability, and the visitor regulations. It does temporarily close due to some extreme weather, volcanic activity, conservation efforts, and safety concerns.

Knowing the Route on Your Rinjani Solo Trip

Once your permit and guide are sorted, the next thing you should know on your Rinjani solo trip is what your route on the mountain will look like. Our package offers a 3-day, 2-night trekking package to the Rinjani Summit, allowing trekkers to complete the journey at a more comfortable pace.

Here is the 3-day, 2-night day-by-day breakdown of what you can expect of the route. From your first stretch to the 2 AM summit push. It is worth noting that knowing the route is important so you can prepare your fitness accordingly and prepare for the trek.

Post I - Pemantauan (1,300 masl)

About a 2-hour trek from the trailhead gate. This is your first stretch; the trek is gradually gaining elevation as you leave the lowland behind. It's an open nature rest area, giving you a chance to take a break and catch your breath. You'll have your first real views of the surrounding terrain at this point.

Post II - Tengean (1,800 masl)

Less than an hour past the first post, you’ll reach Post II at Tengean. This will be your lunch stop for the day, and one of the scenic breaks on the trail. Your guide and trekking team will prepare lunch here, giving you time to rest before continuing the climb.

Post III - Pelawangan Crater Rim Camp (1,800-2,639 masl)

It’ll be roughly 1.5 hours to reach Post III from Post II. After that, you’ll face the toughest stretch of the day to the Pelawangan Sembalun Crater Rim Camp. The trek will take you 3-3.5 hours through steep terrain inside the pine forest. The climb to this point is timed so you’ll arrive at the camp just before sunset. Eventually, when you reach the camp, you can unwind while you wait for the crew to prepare dinner. You'll also spend the night here before reaching the summit early the next day.

Summit Push - Mt. Rinjani (3,726 masl)

At 2 AM, you’ll begin the 3-3.5-hour summit. You'll climb up Rinjani’s steep, sandy final stretch. You will need to prepare for freezing temperatures, strong winds, and the challenging sandy terrain during the final ascent. Reaching the 3,726 m summit rewards you with sweeping sunrise across the Wallace Line to Bali, Mt. Agung, and Sumbawa Island. Then it’ll take about 5 hours to get back down.

Best Time to Go for Your Rinjani Solo Trip

Mount Rinjani trails change throughout the year. Different seasons mean different difficulty of the trek. Hiking in dry months is generally easier because the ground is stronger. The rainy season can make trekking more challenging due to slippery trails, muddy conditions, and increased safety risks. That's why planning your solo Rinjani trip around the best time is important

  1. Dry season (May-September): During these months, the weather is relatively clear. You could see panoramic valleys, lakes, and craters. It’s also safer, as the mountain has less slippery terrain throughout this season

  2. Shoulder months (April and October): This is the period between peak season and the off-peak season. During the two months, you will encounter fewer people on the hike; that’s why it is often considered a ‘sweet spot’ for some hikers.
