News Update | Putu Puspa Negara | Sunday, February 2nd, 2025

On February 1, 2025, the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) of the Republic of Indonesia issued a weekly weather outlook release. BMKG appealed to the public to remain vigilant. The combination of several atmospheric phenomena lately can increase the risk of hydrometeorological disasters, such as floods, landslides, and strong winds that can cause trees to fall.

The Asian monsoon is one of the natural activities that brings large amounts of humid air from Asia, reinforced by the Cold Surge phenomenon which has been identified as being in the significant category for the past few days. In addition, other atmospheric phenomena such as La Niña, Madden Julian Oscillation (MJO), and Atmospheric Waves also contribute to the occurrence of extreme weather in several regions in Indonesia.

Weather Outlook for the Next Week on Lombok Island

BMKG includes Lombok Island (West Nusa Tenggara Province) in the Heavy Rain - Very Heavy Rain category. In Lombok, the presence of Equatorial Rossby waves has been detected which can increase rainfall. Kelvin waves are also expected to occur in several areas, including Lombok, which contribute to the formation of rain clouds. With this phenomenon, the public is advised to be aware of the possibility of heavy rain accompanied by lightning as well as floods and landslides.

As previously informed, Mount Rinjani National Park is closed from January 1 to April 2, 2025, avoid illegal climbing for the safety of all.
