Limited Opening

Mount Rinjani Trekking Status – Limited Opening

Last Updated:

Mount Rinjani National Park is currently open for trekking on a limited basis following a new policy issued by the Indonesian Ministry of Forestry to reduce the risk of forest and land fires during the peak of the 2026 dry season.

The policy is based on Circular Letter of the Director General of Conservation of Natural Resources and Ecosystems (KSDAE) No. SE.4/KSDAE/SKSDAE/KSA.02.02/B/08/2026, dated 31 August 2026, concerning the temporary closure and limited opening of mountain trekking activities in conservation areas to prevent forest fires.

The policy takes effect from 1 September 2026.

Is Mount Rinjani Closed?

No. Mount Rinjani is not completely closed.

Under the new national policy, Mount Rinjani National Park is included among the conservation areas where trekking activities are opened on a limited basis, with stricter monitoring and restrictions to reduce the risk of forest fires.

The government has applied different measures to different mountain areas depending on their level of fire risk. Some high-risk areas are temporarily closed, while Mount Rinjani is included in the limited-opening category.

This means trekking may continue, but access and ticket issuance are subject to the latest regulations from the National Park authority.

Important Update on Rinjani Trekking Tickets

According to the latest information communicated by the Rinjani National Park Authority (TNGR), the online booking service for Rinjani trekking tickets will remain available only for a limited period.

The current information provided by TNGR is:

  • Online trekking ticket booking can be made until 2 September 2026 at 23:59 WITA.
  • Bookings that have been completed and paid within the permitted period will continue to be served according to the applicable regulations.
  • After the booking deadline, the online booking service may be suspended until further notice.
  • Further decisions will be made following an evaluation with relevant stakeholders.

Therefore, trekkers who already have an issued and paid trekking ticket can continue with their planned trek, subject to the applicable National Park regulations and safety conditions.

Important: The availability of a trekking date is not the same as having an issued trekking ticket. Trekkers should make sure that their booking has been properly completed and the ticket has been issued by the National Park system.

Why Has Trekking Been Restricted?

The new policy is part of the government's efforts to prevent forest and land fires (karhutla) during the peak of the dry season.

During prolonged dry conditions, vegetation, fallen leaves, grass, and other natural materials around mountain trails can become highly combustible. Human activity in these areas can increase the risk of accidental fires.

According to the Ministry of Forestry, the status of trekking areas is determined through risk assessment that considers factors including the vulnerability of the area, the accumulation of dry combustible materials, potential ecological impacts, and the ability to control and respond to fires in the field.

The limited-opening policy is therefore a precautionary measure designed to balance visitor safety, environmental protection, and controlled access to the mountain.

What Does “Limited Opening” Mean for Trekkers?

For visitors planning to climb Mount Rinjani, the current situation means:

1. Trekking is still possible

Mount Rinjani remains accessible for trekking under the limited-opening policy. However, trekking is subject to the latest instructions and operational decisions of the National Park authority.

2. New ticket bookings are subject to a deadline

Based on the latest notice from TNGR, online booking can currently be completed until: 2 September 2026 – 23:59 WITA. After this deadline, new online bookings may no longer be available until further notice.

3. Existing issued tickets remain valid

Trekking bookings that have been properly completed and paid within the permitted period will continue to be accommodated in accordance with the applicable regulations.

4. The situation may change

The limited-opening status is not necessarily permanent. The National Park authority and relevant stakeholders will continue to evaluate the situation, particularly the fire risk and conditions in the field. Further changes may therefore be announced depending on the results of these evaluations.

Safety and Fire Prevention

All trekkers are strongly encouraged to help protect Mount Rinjani during this period. Visitors should:

  • Never throw cigarette butts or any burning material on the trail.
  • Do not make unauthorized fires or campfires.
  • Follow all instructions from guides, porters, and National Park officers.
  • Keep the trekking route and camping areas clean.
  • Avoid activities that could create sparks or ignite dry vegetation.
  • Immediately report any signs of smoke or fire to the nearest guide or National Park officer.

Preventing forest fires is a shared responsibility. Even a small source of ignition can become dangerous under extremely dry conditions.

What Should You Do If You Are Planning to Trek Rinjani?

If you are planning a Mount Rinjani trek during this period, we recommend checking the latest ticket and operational status before making your travel arrangements.

If you already have an issued trekking ticket, your trek can generally proceed according to the booking and the latest regulations from TNGR.

If you have not yet obtained an issued ticket, please be aware that new ticket availability is currently limited and the online booking service may be suspended after the announced deadline.

At Rinjani Trekking Center, we will continue monitoring official updates from the National Park authority and will inform our guests of any significant changes affecting their trek.
