Mount Rinjani Halts New Hiking Tickets After Two Accidents

News Update | Putu Puspa Negara | Thursday, July 17th, 2025

Today, July 17, 2025, through an official press release, the Mount Rinjani National Park Authority (BTNGR) announced a temporary suspension of new hiking ticket sales to Mount Rinjani. This decision follows two consecutive hiking accidents on the trail leading to Segara Anak Lake from the Sembalun Crater Rim (Pelawangan Sembalun).

According to BTNGR, the suspension of new ticket sales is temporary and will remain in effect until further notice. The measure is intended to allow a comprehensive evaluation of hiking safety. However, hikers who have already purchased tickets are still permitted to continue their trek, with the restriction that they are not allowed to proceed to Segara Anak Lake.

As of this publication, BTNGR has not provided a clear explanation for suspending new ticket sales while still allowing entry for those holding existing tickets. The sudden decision has taken local tourism stakeholders including trekking organizers, guides, porters, and vendors by surprise. They hope that “zero accident” routes, such as the trail to the Senaru Crater Rim via Senaru and all southern routes of Mount Rinjani, will remain open for hiking activities.
